Prime Minister Robert Fico will not join any other political group in the European Parliament for now. Instead, he is considering forming a new alliance with left-leaning parties that share his anti-war stance.

Fico’s Smer party was expelled from the Party of Socialists and Democrats in October 2025 for “breaching the values” of the centre-left family. He had previously considered joining the Patriots for Europe but has now dropped that plan.

Fico has repeatedly called for an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine and criticized European Union support for Ukraine, arguing that the conflict should be resolved between Russia and Ukraine. One option for 2026 is to create a new parliamentary group of “friends of peace,” though details are still unclear.

Reports suggest Germany’s Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) could be a potential partner, as it shares Fico’s critical stance on Western European Ukraine policies and migration.
