Did Juan Manuel Serrano use public entities for his “own benefit or that of third parties”?

On Friday, July 10th the Spanish High Court outlined in a writ that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s former chief of staff and postmaster general is now under investigation.

As part of a wide-ranging corruption probe, police were ordered to seize and analyse mobile phone data from Juan Manuel Serrano. The target of the writ, Serrano served as one of Sánchez’s top party aides (2014 to 2018) and was named to head the postal service when Sanchez became PM in July 2018 (in the role until 2023).

Investigating judge Santiago Pedraz stated in writing that Serrano and alleged ringleader Leire Diez “may have used public entities for their own benefit or that of third parties.”

The investigation adds to the pressure already piled upon the embattled Socialist government of Pedro Sánchez.
