An 18-year-old university student who had been stabbed multiple times was handcuffed by police after his alleged attacker claimed he had racially abused and attacked him, before collapsing and dying in the street moments later, a British murder trial heard on Thursday.

Henry Nowak, a first-year student at the University of Southampton, was allegedly stabbed by Vikrum Digwa, 23, during a late-night encounter in Southampton in December 2023.

Prosecutors told Southampton Crown Court that Digwa claimed Mr Nowak had racially abused and attacked him while drunk. Officers initially arrested Mr Nowak before giving first aid after he lost consciousness.

Digwa denies murder and claims he acted in self-defence. His mother, Kiran Kaur, denies assisting an offender after allegedly hiding the knife used in the attack.

The trial continues.
