A 30-year-old Turkish man has been sentenced to six years in prison by the Stuttgart Regional Court for bodily injury resulting in death, after a dispute in an apartment building escalated into a fatal assault on a 78-year-old pensioner.
The court heard that the confrontation took place in Stuttgart when the man returned to the building to collect belongings from the basement. An argument broke out after the elderly resident complained about the condition of the laundry room. The defendant struck the pensioner in the face, causing him to fall and hit the back of his head. The victim later died from a traumatic brain injury almost two weeks after the incident.
The defendant claimed in court that he had been racially insulted and attacked with a broom, arguing that his punch was an act of self-defense. The court rejected this version of events, stating that his statements were not credible overall, except for the admitted blow. Judges concluded that he had acted “out of annoyance,” and dismissed his self-defense claim.
The man was also noted to have eleven prior criminal records, including four for bodily injury, and was on probation at the time of the incident. The court further found that he had previously ignored probation requirements, including anti-aggression training.
Official figures indicate that murder, rape, and knife crime increased in Germany in 2025, despite an overall decline in recorded crime driven largely by changes in drug law enforcement. Among foreign suspects, nationalities most frequently recorded include Turkey, Syria, Romania, Ukraine, Poland, and Afghanistan, according to the data.
