German police have launched a double homicide investigation after two corpses were discovered near an asylum accommodation facility in the southern city of Augsburg. Shortly afterwards, a 29-year-old man was taken into custody as the primary suspect.
According to a police spokesperson, authorities were called to the scene in the southern district of Augsburg on the evening of Monday, August 3rd. Investigators discovered the bodies of two men: a 39-year-old with dual Syrian and Saudi Arabian citizenship, and a 54-year-old Iraqi national.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released in accordance with German privacy laws, is a 29-year-old man holding both Syrian and Saudi Arabian citizenship. He was provisionally arrested at the scene and is currently being investigated on two counts of manslaughter (Totschlag).
Authorities have not yet officially confirmed whether the suspect and the victims were residents of the nearby asylum facility, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Forensic teams and emergency services cordoned off the area and spent hours examining the crime scene late into the night and through Tuesday morning.
Police stated that there are currently no indications pointing to any further suspects. The exact background and motive behind the fatal incident remain under investigation.
