U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Polish President Karol Nawrocki in the White House on Wednesday, September 3rd, with a flyover of military jets ahead of their Oval Office meeting and a private lunch.
Trump had invited the Polish head of state just days after Nawrocki was sworn in in August and then made sure he joined a phone call about Ukraine with European leaders instead of his rival, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
This is not Nawrocki’s first time at the White House. Trump hosted him back in May, endorsing the conservative candidate in the Polish presidential election.
During the presser before the actual talks the U.S. president told Nawrocki that the U.S. will “help Poland protect itself.”
The two leaders are expected to discuss the war in Ukraine and energy security, as well as Poland’s security concerns. Experts predict Trump would like to see Warsaw to buy even more U.S. weapons for its own use and to send to Ukraine.
In Poland, the run-up to the visit was marked by open conflict between the foreign ministry and the president’s team over preparations, with the two sides publicly calling each other names in the process. Unusually, there is no high-ranking government official in Nawrocki’s delegation.
