Claims of diplomatic success occur against the backdrop of Israel and Hezbollah exchanging fire—and renewed direct conflict between the Islamic Republic and the Jewish State.

According to U.S. president Donald Trump, negotiators are now in the “final throes” of resolving the most recent Middle East conflict. In comments to journalists on Tuesday, June 9, he presented a peace deal with Tehran as ‘imminent.’

Speaking of the continuing exchange of fire between Iran and Israel, Trump described the regional rivals as “going back and forth, and now, they both agreed through me to stop, and we’re in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal.”

Israel is committed to defeating Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, while Iran has sought to protect its terrorist proxy. Tehran has insisted that Lebanon be included in peace negotiations, something Israel disagrees with. Previously, Trump urged both sides to stop “shooting” and said that “final negotiations” towards peace would proceed “subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way.”

Direct hostilities between Israel and Iran resumed this week for the first time since April, drawing the two sides into further armed conflict. To date, a seemingly exasperated Trump has not let such fighting end his peace efforts in the Middle East. Instead, he estimated that completing negotiations would take “two or three days.”
