Wednesday January 28th saw U.S. president Donald Trump warn Iran that “time is running out” to reach a nuclear agreement, renewing threats of military action—after Tehran rejected negotiations conducted under pressure.
In a social media post, Trump urged Iran to “come to the table” and negotiate a “fair and equitable deal—NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS.” Trump has repeatedly left open the option of new military action against Iran after Washington backed and joined the 12-day war in June.
“The next attack will be far worse,” Trump said, adding that a “massive armada” was heading toward the region.
The comments came after Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran would not engage in talks while facing military threats. Speaking on state television, Araghchi said diplomacy conducted “through military threat” was neither effective nor acceptable, and called on Washington to abandon threats and what he described as excessive demands.
Trump has also previously threatened action in response to Iran’s violent crackdown on anti-government protests. Meanwhile, the U.S. military has confirmed the arrival of a naval strike group led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in Middle Eastern waters, though its exact location has not been disclosed.
