GCHQ spy chief claims that Russia is losing momentum in the war, despite its ongoing efforts.

Russia’s war in Ukraine has resulted in heavy losses, with nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers believed to have been killed since 2022, according to the head of the UK’s GCHQ signals intelligence organisation.

Speaking publicly, director Anne Keast-Butler described the current moment as a serious turning point, warning that Russia continues to pose a broad and evolving security challenge beyond the battlefield.

She said Moscow has been “relentlessly targeting” critical infrastructure, supply chains, and democratic institutions in the UK and across allied countries, while also engaging in cyber operations and other forms of hybrid activity. At the same time, she noted that Russia appears to be facing growing strain in the conflict, stating that it is “going backwards on the battlefield” despite continuing its military efforts.

Independent estimates of battlefield losses remain difficult to verify, but analysts suggest the true number may be significantly higher than confirmed figures. Both sides have released limited data on their own casualties.

Separately, North Korea has continued to support Russia’s war effort, describing it as a “sacred” mission tied to its security interests. According to South Korean intelligence assessments, Pyongyang has provided missiles, munitions, and even personnel to assist Moscow. In return, it is believed to have received economic aid and access to military technology.
