A BBC investigation has exposed how a human trafficker was living a new life, illegally in the Leicestershire village of Blaby in the English East Midlands.
Iraqi Kurd Twana Jamal—a convicted criminal dubbed the “godfather” of French migrant camps—was operating two Candy Corner mini-marts and claiming to be awaiting the completion of his asylum application. He also boasted of driving without a licence and ‘owning’ the nearby city of Leicester.
This enraged local Conservative MP Alberto Costa, who posted on X:
This is a shocking and unforgivable failure by the Home Office.
A convicted human trafficker with no right to live or work in the UK has reportedly been able to open a shop and operate in Blaby, yet neither Leicestershire Police, Blaby District Council nor I, as the local MP, were informed.
This raises serious questions about the government’s competence and its ability to enforce the law. I am demanding immediate answers from ministers and full accountability for this extraordinary breakdown.
Was Costa elected for his powers of observation?
Literally right next door to his constituency office is one of Jamal’s Candy Corner stores. Costa was duly roasted on social media, most pointedly with photographic evidence when @marti81_16 wrote:
Not informed? If only there was some way u could have known it was happening in ur local area
