The British government announced on Tuesday, March 3rd that it would suspend issuing student visas to nationals from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, as well as work visas for Afghan nationals—as part of a broader crackdown on asylum seekers using legal entry routes.
The Home Office revealed that there has been a significant surge in asylum claims from individuals entering on these visas. Records indicate that nearly 135,000 asylum seekers in total have entered the UK via legal routes since 2021.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said:
Britain will always provide refuge to those fleeing war and persecution, but our visa system must not be abused.
