Berlin has been shocked by a tenfold rise in Ukrainian asylum seekers since August, with 1.29 million now registered in the country.

Ukraine relaxing  relaxed exit rules for young men at the end of August has  increased the number of Ukrainian asylum seekers entering Germany. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior,  the total weekly arrivals of men aged 18–22 has risen from around 100 to roughly 1,000.

Overall registrations of Ukrainians seeking protection in Germany have grown steadily with 7,961 recorded in May, 11,277 in August and 18,755 in September through the “Free” system. Those registered do not receive asylum but are granted residence, and they receive immediate access to social benefits and the labor market.

On October 4th, 1.29 million Ukrainians were registered as being in Germany in connection with the war, though about 450,000 are considered no longer resident. Ukraine has also allowed young men living abroad to return and leave again with the current mobilization age set at 25.
