A Hungarian Member of the European Parliament (MEP) has asked the EU Parliament to condemn Ukrainian nationalists that threatened her after she raised concerns about atrocities being committed against members of the Hungarian community in Ukraine.
Speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday, April 1st, Zsuzsanna Borvendég, member of the right-wing Mi Hazánk Mozgalom (Our Homeland Movement) party said:
In my most recent pro-peace speech, I raised concerns about violations of the rights of Hungarians living in Ukraine, for which I received a threatening email from Ukrainian extremists. They declared me an enemy of Ukraine and issued a final warning to me.
The representative called for the leadership of the Parliament to condemn the extremists, and said it should condemn atrocities committed by both warring factions in the Russia-Ukraine war.
“It is a dangerous message if the EU, by applying double standards, turns a blind eye to the trampling of human rights, regardless of who commits it,” she said.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has repeatedly raised concerns even before the war began about the violation of the rights of Hungarian minorities in the Transcarpathian region.
Understandably, Hungary has been reluctant to give the green light to Ukraine’s accession to the EU and NATO without guarantees of protecting minorities and reinstalling their rights.
