The United States opposes inviting Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to the NATO summit to be held in The Hague on June 24th, allied diplomatic sources confided to Italian news agency ANSA.
For now, invitations have only been sent to four partners: Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
According to one of the anonymous sources, “Almost all of the allies have expressed doubts to Washington about this choice.” The topic may come up at the informal NATO foreign ministerial meeting in Antalya, Turkey, which opens this evening with the dinner organized by the hosts.
The organization of the summit in The Hague will be among the items on the agenda today, although no decisions are expected to be made at this point. What is known is that the summit will include a dinner offered by the Dutch royals on the evening of June 24th, with the representatives of the Asian countries and Australia in attendance, while the actual session, dedicated to the increase in military spending and the final adoption of the capability objectives, will be held on Wednesday, June 25th.
For now no NATO-Ukraine Council is planned, as has happened in the past. In order not to exclude Kyiv completely, it has emerged that the Council could be organized at the level of foreign and defense ministers, who will be present at the summit.
