U.S. Strikes on Iran Followed by Tehran Retaliation in the Region

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the U.S. attacks were “absolutely necessary.”

The United States hit over 80 targets during renewed strikes on Iran, the U.S. Central Command said on Tuesday, in retaliation after Tehran attacked three ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

“U.S. forces struck Iranian defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities, and more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps small boats in and near the strait,” the U.S. military said in a statement on X.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in Ankara for a NATO summit, said the U.S. strikes on Iran were “absolutely necessary.”

On Wednesday, Iranian media reported a series of blasts in the port city of Bushehr. Bushehr hosts the country’s only civilian nuclear power plant and lies near Kharg island, the main oil terminal through which 90% of Iranian crude exports transit.

In response, Iran hit Kuwaiti targets, and also carried out strikes in Bahrain, targeting the Sheikh Isa air base, Iran’s military said in a statement carried by the official IRNA news agency.
