Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski has urged NATO to consider intercepting Russian drones and missiles in Ukrainian airspace.
“We need to think about this. NATO and the EU could do it, but Poland cannot decide alone,” Sikorski said. Shooting down Russian drones “would be beneficial,” he added, noting that “Ukraine is far ahead of us…we are not training Ukrainians, they are training us.”
The remarks came after 19 drones entered Polish airspace during a large-scale Russian airstrike on Ukraine on the night of September 10-11. Polish warplanes, along with NATO fighters including Dutch F-35s, intercepted the drones for the first time since the war began.
Deputy PM Sikorski also warned that sinking Russian “shadow fleet” ships in the Baltic could trigger an ecological disaster. Prime Minister Donald Tusk added the fleet consists of “flagless ships carrying Russian oil…often in terrible condition,” making intervention urgent.
