A restructuring of U.S. federal agencies ordered by President Trump has left a pro-Brussels Cold War relic out in the cold.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) announced that its Hungarian editorial office ceased operations on November 21st, following a directive from the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM).

The outlet thanked its readers for their support and confirmed that while the website will remain accessible, no new content will be published.

USAGM decided earlier this month to discontinue the Hungarian-language service, saying resources must be redirected “in the interests of American taxpayers.”

The move comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March to eliminate several federal agencies, including those overseeing RFE/RL.

The newsroom had already experienced significant layoffs this year and filed a lawsuit challenging the administration’s decision but the court dismissed the case.

Once it became clear in April 2025 that U.S. funding was being withdrawn, the European Parliament began debating whether European Union money should be used to cover the shortfall.
