Hungary has launched a national petition, giving citizens a chance to take a stand against Brussels’ war plans and rising costs. Through this petition, Hungarians can voice a clear “no,” against financing the Russia-Ukraine war, supporting Ukraine financially over the next 10 years, and to increased cost of living caused by the conflict.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán presented the three points of the petition during an anti-war gathering in Kaposvár:
- Say no to financing the Russia–Ukraine war,
- Say no to ten years of support for Ukraine,
- Say no to higher utility costs due to the war.
The Prime Minister emphasized that if Ukraine were an EU member, the European Union would be directly involved in military conflict with Russia, adding
Ukraine must remain outside the European Union; allowing them in would be life-threatening and a continuous war risk for Hungary.
Balázs Hidvéghi, Parliamentary Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office, announced that the petition sheets will be mailed this week, first in Budapest and then nationwide. He declared
It is time to put a stop to this. I urge everyone who does not want Hungarians to pay for the war, for Ukraine’s operations, and even higher bills due to the conflict to join the petition. Let’s send a clear message to Brussels and its puppets: we will not pay.
Zoltán Kovács, Secretary of State for International Communication backed the move, adding:
The government is launching the national petition to give the Hungarian people, for the first and only time in Europe, a chance to decide whether they want Brussels to spend our money on war and Ukraine. In Brussels, it has been decided that the war and Ukraine will be paid for with Europeans’ money, however much it costs and however long it lasts.
The documents must be returned by March 23rd.
