Italian authorities have executed the immediate expulsion of a Pakistani man following a violent threat against Anna Maria Cisint, a Member of the European Parliament for the Lega party (Patriots for Europe) and former mayor of Monfalcone. The confrontation that led to the deportation occurred outside the Gorizia Town Hall. According to reports, the man approached Cisint and shouted, “I’ll slit your throat,” while accompanying the verbal threat with a menacing hand gesture. Bystanders intervened at the scene and promptly alerted law enforcement officials, who arrived shortly thereafter.

The attack is widely believed to be connected to Cisint’s political stance and her record as mayor. She has been a long-standing and vocal opponent of Islamic extremism and previously enacted measures targeting illegal religious structures in Monfalcone.

In a statement following the incident, Cisint defended her actions, stating,

My crime? Closing three illegal mosques and banning entry to municipal buildings to anyone who shows up with their face completely covered.

She added that she sees this time in the country as a battle for the legal rights and freedoms of all Italians. She sees her work as a fight against radicalization and those who “would replace us and transform Italy into a branch of a theocratic regime by imposing Sharia law.”

The attacker, a long-term resident of Monfalcone, was already known to police with a criminal record that included charges for property damage and disturbing the peace. His legal status in the country was already in jeopardy; an application to renew his work permit had been previously rejected due to insufficient documentation and his history of public order offenses.

Leveraging his lack of legal authorization to remain, Italian authorities moved quickly to issue a formal expulsion order. The man was successfully deported to Doha. Officials confirmed that should he attempt to re-enter Italy, he will be stopped and refused entry at the border.
