Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has resolutely denied a Politico report claiming he was alarmed by his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, calling the story “lies of the hateful, pro-Brussels liberal portal.”
In a detailed statement issued this morning, Fico criticized what he described as a broader trend in liberal media and politics, including the misuse of criminal law to silence opponents and the “boundless media lies” aimed at undermining political leaders in Slovakia and the U.S.
I STRONGLY REJECT THE LIES OF THE HATEFUL, PRO-BRUSSELS LIBERAL PORTAL POLITICO,
Robert Fico stated in an X post, proceding to refute Politico‘s allegations one by one. In the post, Fico also took a jab at Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar, who had suggested in a January 23rd interview with a Hungarian news site that the Hungarian government was ready to “rescue” the Slovak PM and give him asylum in Hungary had his parliamentary immunity been suspended in 2022. Fico dismissed Magyar’s allegation as nonsense, saying Magyar is “a pro-Brussels activist” who “spreads lies” about him.

The Slovak leader also accused Politico of attempting to damage Slovakia’s international relationships and undermine cooperation with the U.S.
This is not the first time the trustworthiness as a news source of the liberal outlet, considered by many the unofficial mouthpiece of the Brussels’ establishment, comes into question. Politico faced criticism after its November 23rd “poll of polls” for Hungary last year first showed the governing Fidesz–KDNP alliance ahead in the spring 2026 elections but later changed the figures to put the Tisza Party in front.
