A Spanish woman was assaulted in central Barcelona by an African immigrant in the early hours of the morning after telling a man she was a Christian, according to reports.

The attack involved a 19-year-old man of North African origin who was later arrested by police. The assault took place around 2 a.m. near La Rambla, one of the city’s busiest areas. Emergency services were called and paramedics treated the woman at the scene for her injuries.

The suspect reportedly approached the woman and inquired about her religion. When she confirmed that she was Christian, he allegedly became aggressive, shouting insults and calling her a “Christian whore” before physically assaulting her.

Local authorities detained the suspect shortly after the incident. He was brought before judicial authorities on charges that include violation of fundamental rights on religious grounds and bodily harm.

The security situation is unlikely to get any better soon in Spain. Socialist Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s prime minister, recently announced the legalization of over half a million illegal immigrants. The decision not only impacts the Spanish but all of Europe, since the freedom of movement allows these people to travel anywhere within Europe.

The Barcelona attack comes amid broader concerns about anti-Christian incidents across Europe. Data from the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe indicates that 2,211 anti-Christian hate crimes were recorded on the continent in 2024. These included 274 physical attacks.

The same report notes a significant increase in arson attacks targeting churches and Christian institutions, with 94 cases documented in 2024, which is double the number reported the previous year. Germany recorded the highest number of such incidents, with 33 cases.

According to the data, the majority of anti-Christian crimes occurred in France (770 cases), the United Kingdom (502), Germany (337), and Austria (116). These incidents range from vandalism, such as graffiti and property damage, to acts of violence, including murder.

While official statistics do not consistently record motives, the report notes that observers have pointed out a concentration of such incidents in countries with large Muslim immigrant populations and in countries that allowed the largest influx of immigrants into the country. On the other hand, countries that have resisted pressure to allow mass immigration, such as Hungary, rank the lowest on the list.
