Marco Rubio spoke with unvarnished candor about the situation in Ukraine.
“It was unfair of us to lead Ukraine to believe that it could defeat Russia,” said Marco Rubio, the new U.S. Secretary of State, on the Megyn Kelly Show.
The interview covered, among other things, Rubio’s previous role as a senator and the tragic plane crash in Washington. At one point, the war in Ukraine was also discussed, and the secretary did not mince words in expressing his strong opinion on the matter. The reporter noted that Republican politicians hold the view that too much money has already been spent on supporting Ukraine, and that it is time to accept the fact that Ukraine has lost the war and will not regain its lost territories.
It was dishonest to lead Ukrainians to believe that they would not only be able to defeat the Russians attacking them, but “destroy them, push them all the way back to where they were in 2012 or 2014, before they occupied Crimea.”
He adds that, in his view, the consequence of this baseless promise is that over the past year and a half, the U.S. has financed a stalemate that has only prolonged the suffering of the people.
“Meanwhile, Ukraine is being set back 100 years; their energy grid is being destroyed. Someone will have to pay for the reconstruction later.”
