The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has hit a record high in Saxony-Anhalt, with a new poll putting the party at 39% support just a year before the next state election.
The Infratest dimap survey for Volksstimme, Mitteldeutsche Zeitung and MDR showed the AfD up 19 points since February 2022, well ahead of the Christian Democrats (CDU) on 27%, down six points. The Left Party polled 13% (+2), while the Social Democrats (SPD) plunged to 7% (–9).
The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) debuted at 6%, while Greens (3%) and Free Democrats (FDP) (3%) fell below the 5% threshold for entering parliament.
At the 2021 state election, the CDU led with 37.1% to the AfD’s 20.8%. Minister-President Reiner Haseloff (CDU), who plans to step down in 2026, has proposed state party leader Sven Schulze as his successor. The CDU will confirm its top candidate on Nov. 1.
