The Barcelona City Council has distributed to the city’s schools a set of “Guidelines for Educational Centers on Ramadan.” This Office of Religious Affairs (OAR) document recommends that school principals—as a gesture of respect for the Muslim celebration—not carry out extracurricular activities such as music or dance, which may be considered by some people as “inappropriate” in this month “dedicated to spirituality.”
The guide explains:
Some Muslims may consider music or dance an inappropriate activity for the month of Ramadan, as it is considered a month dedicated to spirituality in which it is especially important to maintain a pious attitude.
Furthermore, the document highlights that it would be advisable to
take this sensitivity into account when scheduling activities or to offer alternative events.
