On Saturday evening, police carried out a raid at Liedts Square in Schaerbeek, seizing 103 packets of cocaine and 18 packs of e-cigarettes, and issuing 42 fines.
Nearly 60 police officers took part in the operation, which was conducted in cooperation with the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office. The action was aimed at tackling drug sales and consumption while improving the sense of security for local residents, shopkeepers, and regular visitors. Police confirmed that the checks were carried out without incident.
The raid resulted in five judicial arrests and one administrative detention. In total, 73 individuals and five businesses were checked, leading to the seizure of 103 packets of cocaine and 18 packs of e-cigarettes.
Liedts Square is considered a “hotspot” for drug-related activity in Brussels. Authorities say they are pursuing a comprehensive strategy in the area, combining preventive measures with repressive action.
Drug related violence in Brussels has become enough of a problem that Interior Minister Bernard Quintin earlier this week told the Brussels Times that he plans to fight it with a plan that involves having soldiers on the streets in the EU capital.
