Beijing has stated that all parties must heed the international community’s call to resume safe maritime traffic through the strait.

During talks with his Iranian counterpart on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for an end to hostilities in the Middle East and urged the U.S. and Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.

Following the meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing, Wang declared “China believes that a complete cessation of fighting must be achieved without delay, that restarting hostilities is unacceptable, and that continuing negotiations remains essential.”

He also expressed hope that “the parties concerned will respond as quickly as possible to the urgent call of the international community” for the safe and normal resumption of maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.

Furthermore, China welcomed Iran’s commitment to not develop nuclear weapons, while maintaining that Tehran has a legitimate right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
