China is being advised to forge ahead with the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the years ahead, according to official accounts of an industry forum in Changchun, Jilin province.
Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Zhang Yongwei—secretary-general of the China EV 100 —flagged up Chinese progress in incorporating AI into both the manufacture of the machines and in assisting their drivers. Its application as part of ‘intelligent parking’ can now be found in more than 20% percent of mid- to high-end models, leading to additional social benefits.
Zhang claims that success in China’s auto sector owes much to the involvement of high-tech firms such as Huawei, DeepRoute.ai, and Momenta at early stages of the development process.
The announcement parallels the BRICS Media and Think Tank Forum on Wednesday, July 16th, where representatives backed plans to promote AI cooperation across the Global South.
Reports from China are not those of a free press and often adhere to a dogmatic national self-sufficiency narrative, so caution is required. Nevertheless, the boldness around embracing AI contrasts sharply with the politically motivated excessive caution now on show from the European Union.
