Croatia will reinstate mandatory military service for young men with its new Law on Service in the Armed Forces, it announced on Wednesday, June 4th.
If successfully enacted, the law will oblige male citizens to serve for two months. Croatia previously abolished conscription in 2008. The move, backed by President Zoran Milanović, would bring in a total of 4,000 conscripts a year.
Conscientious objectors will be offered two alternative methods to serve the country, for longer at lower rates of pay, if any.
