After months of inactivity, tickets are back on sale for international flights to and from Mashhad Airport in northeast Iran.

Iran will resume international flights on Monday, April 20th from Mashhad Shahid Hasheminejad International Airport in the country’s northeast, marking the first step in a phased reopening of its civilian airspace following months of closure.

Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation said permission had been granted for international passenger services to restart at Mashhad Airport. State television, quoting the authority, said operations would begin from Monday—while the official IRNA news agency confirmed that passengers can now purchase tickets for international routes to and from the airport.

Iranian airports have been closed since the outbreak of war with Israel and the United States on 28th February. Authorities previously outlined a phased approach, beginning with transit flights and services from eastern airports, before expanding operations nationwide.

Under the plan, Tehran’s main airports—Imam Khomeini and Mehrabad—are expected to reopen in a later phase, with western airports also set to resume operations. Officials said the step-by-step process is intended to ensure safety and stability as airspace restrictions are lifted.

The announcement comes as Iran continues to assess the impact of regional warfare. The state-run Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs said on Saturday, April 18th that more than 3,400 people were killed during the war. Foundation head Ahmad Mousavi was quoted by the ISNA news agency as saying that 3,468 “martyrs… fell during the recent conflict.”
