Schools in the Estonian city of Tartu have come up with a novel solution to protect children from stray drones: they are putting protective film on the windows to prevent injuries.
Ukrainian drones have entered NATO and European Union territory several times by accident, with Kyiv blaming Moscow, saying its electronic jamming caused the accidental incursions.
In the first month of summer, children in Tartu had to be taken to a shelter due to the approach of a hijacked drone.
“We didn’t know what to do because we weren’t prepared. We were actually quite scared ourselves,” said Karin Lukk, principal of Kivilinna Secondary School in Tartu.
During the summer holidays, all other schools and kindergartens in Tartu are preparing places where children can hide in case of a new threat, such as school gyms and swimming pools.
As is known, more people died in Ukraine from glass fragments from explosions than from the actual explosions, hence the idea of using protective film on the windows of designated shelters.
The city’s 30 schools and 38 kindergartens are being secured, and generators are being distributed to residential buildings to keep people warm in case of power outages in winter, said Martin Bek, deputy mayor of Tartu. Other Estonian cities are considering following Tartu’s example.
