The foreign minister of the European Union approved the sanctions after the new Hungarian administration broke with the previous Budapest stance of vetoing anti-Israel measures.

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas announced on May 11th that the EU’s foreign ministers greenlighted sanctions against “Israeli settlers over violence against Palestinians.”

The sanctions were approved after the incoming Hungarian administration chose not to veto them, breaking with the principle of conservative prime minister Viktor Orbán’s government, ousted following Fidesz’s electoral defeat on April 12th, to veto anti-Israel meausers in the European Union. The move comes as no suprise, as we predicted based on previous pledges of Hungary’s recently sworn-in head of government, Péter Magyar.

Meanwhile, Brussels is set to receive Taliban officials for talks about returning Afghan migrants to Afghanistan.
