Four illegal migrants were found dead near the Croatia-Slovenia border, and two others were taken to a hospital in serious condition after being transported by truck in “inhumane conditions,” Croatian police said Monday.
Thirteen other individuals were also found by police near the Croatian village of Donje Prilisce—located 70 kilometres southwest of the capital, Zagreb–and have been taken to a detention centre. Police stated that the group was allegedly abandoned at the border by an unidentified smuggler who fled the scene.
Croatia, a member of the European Union, remains a major transit country for illegal migrants seeking to reach Western Europe via the Balkan route.
