Sunday, June 14th, saw teargas fired at protesters in Geneva. The demonstrators are opposed to the forthcoming Group of Seven (G-7) summit across the border in Evian, eastern France.
A Tesla vehicle was set on fire—with some of the 20,000 ‘No G-7’ marchers reacting to the news that Elon Musk had become the world’s first trillionaire—while others smashed the windows of a nearby United Nations agency.
Businesses were boarded up in readiness for the event, while some marchers were critical of the police presence. Mattia Piccard told Reuters:
This is an attempt to frighten demonstrators, to frighten people and discourage them from coming out to protest.
The G-7 members, the European Union, and the International Monetary Fund are scheduled to meet behind closed doors, with the world economy and the Middle East crisis likely to be high up the agenda.
