Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced on Tuesday afternoon in a press conference livestreamed from Luxembourg that Hungary, at the meeting of EU ministers in charge of energy affairs, initiated that the European Commission not develop a draft regulation on the elimination of Russian energy sources. In addition, Hungary, together with Slovakia, vetoed a Council resolution that would have called on the Commission to make progress in June in order to implement the banning of Russian energy imports.
Szijjártó stated that the “von der Leyen-Zelensky plan” seriously infringes on Hungary’s sovereignty, as energy policy decisions are the competence of member states according to the Treaties of the European Union. He also highlighted that should the plan be carried out, Hungary’s energy security would be seriously jeopardised.
