U.S. president Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday, June 23rd, that Iran has agreed to International Atomic Energy Agency nuclear inspections. If true, this development would build on the foundation of the earlier ceasefire-centred Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which, to date, has paused the U.S.-Iran war.

Trump took to social media to declare:

Iran has fully and completely agreed to highest level Nuclear inspections long into the future (Infinity!!!)

This will insure [sic] ‘Nuclear Honesty.’ If they did not agree to this, there would be no further negotiations!

Iran denied making any such concessions.

The MoU has led to a fragile peace, lifting sanctions on Iran for 60 days, starting Monday. Both sides now claim to allow safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz, which, according to Trump, permits the U.S. Treasury to release Iranian funds into U.S. escrow, from where they will be spent on U.S.-based food and medical aid to be delivered back up the Strait to assist ordinary Iranians in what Trump now calls a “humanitarian crisis.”
