The White House’s message to G7 members in Évian is that war in the Middle East is over.

U.S. President Donald Trump arrived for the G7 Summit in France and declared an end to war with Iran.

The informal announcement on Monday, June 15th pointed to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that had been agreed upon—“a very powerful document” that would appear in public “pretty soon … sometime after Friday,” according to Trump.

The president promised that, if adhered to, the MoU would prevent Iran from ever acquiring a nuclear weapon and the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened for navigation without charge, subject to a successful minesweeping operation to be completed by Friday (with French participation).

Trump claims that Iran’s official signature on the document will mean an end to hostilities—although, technically, an MoU merely paves the way for a more substantial agreement to be reached.

Previous such announcements have since gone on to be reassessed as false starts, with breakthroughs being announced side-by-side with renewed hostilities.
