Hundreds killed; Iran launches ineffective retaliatory strikes against Gulf nations and Israel—which has opened a new front against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Loud explosions shook Tehran on Tuesday, March 17th following a night of bombing, coinciding with U.S. president Donald Trump pressing for assistance amid global economic turmoil.

Oil prices rose more than 5% on Tuesday after several countries pushed back against Trump’s demand that they help protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway which is key to the transit of crude oil and liquefied natural gas.

Lebanese state media also reported that Israeli strikes at dawn hit a residential building in Beirut’s southern suburbs, a stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist organization.

The Israeli army also confirmed that it had launched a wave of strikes—possibly killing Iran’s security chief Ali Larijani—“against Iranian terror regime infrastructure across Tehran,” as well as additional strikes in Lebanon.
