The European Commission plans to reimpose duties on Israeli goods by suspending parts of the EU-Israel trade agreement, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Tuesday, September 16th. She noted that the move, affecting 37% of trade worth €42.6 billion in 2024, would come at a high cost for Israel.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen announced the plan during her State of the EU speech with the Commission set to adopt it soon.
However, the proposal needs backing from major states like Germany or Italy, which have so far blocked such measures. Kallas urged skeptics to suggest alternatives if they agree the Gaza situation is “untenable.”
