A Kazakh man has been arrested in Berlin on suspicion of spying for Russia, German prosecutors said on Wednesday, April 29th.
According to prosecutors, the suspect provided his Russian intelligence handler with information on German military aid to Ukraine, as well as photographs of NATO military convoys travelling along motorways. He is also accused of identifying potential targets for sabotage.
The suspect, partially named as Sergej K., had been “in continuous contact from Germany with a Russian intelligence service” since at least May last year, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
Prosecutors said the man volunteered to assist in identifying additional individuals who could be recruited for sabotage or espionage activities, although it remains unclear whether he succeeded in doing so.
Authorities further allege that he passed on information regarding German defence contractors working on drone and robotics technology. He also reportedly supplied numerous images of public buildings across Berlin to his handler.
Police arrested the suspect on Tuesday, and he is expected to appear before a judge on Wednesday, April 29th. Germany, one of Ukraine’s key military backers, has uncovered numerous suspected espionage, sabotage and disinformation operations linked to Russia.
