Lithuania’s defense minister has warned that Russia may be considering a ‘false flag’ provocation against NATO member states in the Baltic region.
Robertas Kaunas stated that while there is no specific date for any potential action, Lithuanian authorities are closely monitoring Russian activities and actively exchanging intelligence with fellow Baltic states (and Poland). A false flag operation refers to an attack designed to appear as though it were carried out by a different perpetrator, allowing the actual attacker to evade direct responsibility.
According to Baltic intelligence assessments reported by the BNS news agency and local media, one potential scenario involves Russia launching a strike on critical Baltic infrastructure using intercepted or reconstructed Ukrainian-made drones. By presenting the attack as of Ukrainian origin, Moscow would attempt to sow discord among Western allies and directly test NATO’s collective resolve to continue supporting Kyiv. Kaunas emphasized that while the threat of a conventional military attack on Lithuania remains low, the region must remain highly vigilant against such non-traditional hybrid threats.
The warnings from Vilnius follow months of heightened concern among senior political and military leaders in Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania regarding Russian escalatory tactics. In recent months, Lithuania has experienced multiple air drone alerts, reflecting the increasingly tense security environment along NATO’s eastern flank. The proposed scenario of a staged drone strike highlights the growing complexity of hybrid warfare in the Baltic Sea region as Western allies seek to maintain unified defensive protocols.
