Against the backdrop of international rivalry, a Beijing-based tech start-up has secured the money it needs for its next round of funding.

Chinese Moonshot AI secured a $35 billion (€31 billion) valuation by raising a larger-than-anticipated $3.5 billion worth of financing, exceeding its initial targets—and unsettling its Silicon Valley rivals.

Moonshot will now approach potential backers for a new and final funding round, aiming to secure capital before an initial public offering in Hong Kong, possibly before the year ends. Its Kimi K3 model is seen as a gamechanger, able to work through vast amounts of data from a simple prompt. Reportedly, daily sales of K3 have surged on at least six occasions.

While the success of the project has prompted U.S. allegations of sharp commercial practice, the Chinese government has adopted a broader, more philosophical-sounding stance, with Xi Jinping calling for a ‘human-centric’ approach to AI. Both nations are expected to begin exploratory talks on the challenges posed by the technology in September this year.
