Four Amsterdam parties have proposed creating the Netherlands’ first asylum center for vulnerable groups, including LGBT people and single women.
The initiative follows the experiences of Omari, a 24-year-old Nigerian who survived brutal attacks at home and harassment in Dutch centers. Council member Suleyman Aslami and activist Peter Vermij are urging the city to work with the national reception agency Coa to set up the safe facility.
Some say that current asylum centers offer limited protection, leaving some refugees at risk. Supporters hope Amsterdam can act before wider European rules take effect.
Omari, now in Germany, said: “Queer youth around the world are trying to escape violence. I try to tell their stories and thus contribute to a safe future.”
The proposal has drawn wider debates on migration in the Netherlands. Critics note that the country already provides substantial support to migrants and question why aid must continually increase despite unresolved demographic challenges, rising public safety concerns and the need for reforms in family policy.
