European Council president António Costa drawn into talks on whether Brussels and the UK should still hold July’s meeting.

The proposed European Union-United Kingdom summit in July is being reassessed—prompted by the departure of British prime minister Keir Starmer—according to the European Commission on Monday, June 22nd.

An official representative stated:

On the question of the EU-UK summit, against the announcement this morning of the resignation of Prime Minister Starmer, we are reassessing with (European Council) President Costa and the UK the opportunity of still holding the summit as had been announced last week.

Informally, a replacement for Starmer—most likely the newly elected Makerfield MP Andy Burnham—is likely to be in place by September. This leaves Starmer with a number of scheduled international commitments to fulfil.

In related news, the Kremlin treated the UK PM’s departure as business as usual, with Moscow mouthpiece Dmitry Peskov asserting that it “is unlikely that anyone on the British political scene will hold a position on our country that differs from Starmer’s.”
