U.S. president Donald Trump said he had secured “fantastic trade deals” with Chinese president Xi Jinping, concluding a high-stakes summit in Beijing that also touched on global security issues, including the Strait of Hormuz.

“We’ve made some fantastic trade deals, great for both countries,” Trump said after meeting Xi at Zhongnanhai, adding: “We’ve settled a lot of different problems that other people wouldn’t have been able to solve.”

The U.S. president, who described Xi as a “great leader” and “friend,” emphasized that “a lot of good” had come out of the visit, though he did not provide specific details on the agreements.

Trump had arrived in China aiming to finalize accords in key sectors such as agriculture, aviation, and artificial intelligence, while also addressing broader geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing war in the Middle East.

Xi struck a more measured tone, calling the visit a “milestone” and stating that the two countries had established “a new bilateral relationship, which is a relationship of constructive strategic stability.” He also signaled a personal gesture, promising to send seeds for the White House Rose Garden.

On security matters, Trump said Xi had made important assurances regarding Iran. “He said he’s not going to give military equipment…he said that strongly,” Trump told Fox News. He added that Xi expressed willingness to help ease tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, saying, “If I can be of any help whatsoever, I would like to help.”

China’s foreign ministry called for “a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire” and urged that “shipping lanes should be reopened as soon as possible.”
