As the White House announces progress on peace in the Middle East, gunfire on its doorstep prompts new security concerns.

U.S. president Donald Trump described on Saturday May 23rd a future agreement with Iran as “largely negotiated,” with details to follow.

The core U.S. principle is that Iran can never have a  nuclear weapon.

Trump’s deal would also include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, where Tehran has both used blocking tactics and threatened a toll on international shipping. In response, Washington ordered the blockading of the critical waterway

The president took to social media to announce a “very good call” with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates,  and others about a “Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE”:

An agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries, as listed.

Peace intermediary Pakistan praised Trump’s announcement, who also placed a call to key regional ally Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a separate incident on Saturday evening, a man suspected of shooting at a security checkpoint close to the White House was killed when Secret Service agents returned fire. Named as Nasire Best, the 21-year-old suspect  who was known to officials with a documented history of poor mental health

This latest fatality occurred within less than a month of a suspect armed with multiple weapons planning to target senior officials while attempting to storm the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, attended by Trump—who on this occasion praised the “swift and professional action” of agents in taking down the assailant.
