An escalating controversy over British law enforcement saw the Trump administration’s state department attack ‘two-tier policing’ as it sent condolences to the family of murder victim Henry Nowak and “the people of the United Kingdom at this troubling time.”
Perhaps straining the so-called special relationship between the U.S. and Britain, Marco Rubio of the former signed off on a Thursday, June 4th statement asserting:
Ideological conditioning and two-tiered policing are glaring symptoms of civilizational decline. They must be rejected across the West.
Earlier that day, a similar message was amplified by Elon Musk in a post on his social media platform X.
Since the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement during the COVID-19 lockdown, there has been a growing sense that the police and wider public authorities are dispensing differential treatment to different sections of British society.
This belief was heightened by the fact that Nowack’s killer enjoyed a special religious dispensation to carry a knife legally, convinced police officers after fatally stabbing the student that he was himself the victim (of a racial attack), along with the fact that that the dying Nowak was handcuffed while murderer Vickrum Digwa stood and watched with police.
Downing Street responded that it does not share this view, while pro-European Union opposition party the Liberal Democrats rekindled an interest in national sovereignty long enough to condemn ‘flagrant interference.’
