Power companies are acting as campaigners by pushing ministers to use pricing to force households to adopt electric vehicles and heat pumps. They criticise “de facto subsidies” for fossil fuel heating systems, claiming that a typical household now pays four times as much annually in levies on electricity usage than on gas usage.
Backed by campaigners, they demand Energy Secretary Ed Miliband “rebalances” levies, increasing the price of gas for consumers. The proposed shift away from gas boilers will prompt further opposition to government Net Zero targets.
