Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado dedicated her Nobel Peace Prize on Friday to “the suffering people of Venezuela”—and to U.S. president Donald Trump, praising his “decisive support of our cause.”
Machado, 58, was honoured for leading the campaign to end President Nicolas Maduro’s rule, with the Nobel Committee calling her “one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times.”
In a post on X, she said, “More than ever we count on President Trump,” as the United States steps up military pressure near Venezuela’s shores, including strikes on drug-running boats.
Machado told the Nobel Institute she was confident of a peaceful transition to democracy: “I’m sure that we will prevail.”
Trump, who has long argued he deserves the Peace Prize, did not receive it himself, despite his efforts in bringing about a ceasefire in Gaza.
