Poland is preparing for a potential surge in organized crime involving illegal firearms smuggled from Ukraine once the war ends. As reported by Rzeczpospolita, Polish police are already undergoing specialized training under ‘Project Trident’ to counter this looming threat.
While the Balkans are currently the primary source of illegal arms, experts warn of a “smuggling boom” following the conflict with Russia. Junior Inspector Adam Radoń of the CBŚP (Central Investigation Bureau) noted that Ukraine is saturated with both post-Soviet weaponry and modern military aid. “The end of armed conflicts always brings the risk of an uncontrolled influx of weapons,” Radoń stated.
Project Trident aims to equip officers to dismantle organized smuggling rings through extensive international cooperation. The initiative involves law enforcement from Czechia, Lithuania, Spain, Moldova, and Ukraine, alongside Europol and Frontex.
