The relative safety of Western Ukraine was shattered on May 13th, as Transcarpathia endured the largest drone attack since the war started.
Significant strikes were reported in Uzhhorod, Mukachevo, and Svaliava, regions home to a substantial ethnic Hungarian minority.
Following a government session in Ópusztaszer, Prime Minister Péter Magyar issued a strongly-worded condemnation of the assault on Hungarian-populated territories, while Foreign Minister Anita Orbán formally summoned the Russian ambassador for a briefing in the morning of May 14th.
Kyiv reacted quickly, with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha both thanking Hungary’s fast and decisive response.
As the aerial assault reportedly continues, Sybiha stressed that collective action is now the only guarantee for continental security, signaling a potential pivot in regional diplomatic alignments.
